REVIEW OF

WHEN DAWN BREAKS

BY JENNIFER SLATTERY

This is the second book by this author that I have read and reviewed, and I must say she is fast becoming a favorite.

When Dawn Breaks is an enjoyable read that I hesitated to put down, but did only because I had to, or work and chores would not have gotten done.

Because of an impending hurricane, Jacqueline Dunn is forced to evacuate her home in Southeast Texas and head north to her estranged daughter’s home. After arriving, and hearing of the devastation to her house and other properties she owned, she decides the quaint little town would be a nice place to put down roots and begin a whole new life. But her daughter, Delana, isn’t happy about that.

Jacqueline finds a new church where she gets involved in volunteering to help those who are homeless from the storm. She becomes attached to three children whose mother is neglectful and abusive, and abandons them at the shelter. What will happen to them?

Jonathan Cohen has just moved to Willow Valley to begin a new job where he can be near his daughter for her wedding, and his sister and her husband. This is where he plans to retire, too. But a wrench is thrown into those plans when he discovers some shady things going on at the railroad company he now works for. And then, a beautiful woman at church seems to be taking up a lot of his time, when he had no intention of getting involved with anyone after his wife died.

I thoroughly enjoy Jennifer Slattery’s style of writing and the stories she weaves. Very unique. What makes her stories seem so relatable are that her hero and heroine are not perfect plastic people. Not that they aren’t attractive, but one character will notice something oddly unattractive about the other, such as hairy toes.

I look forward to more from Jennifer Slattery. If you like authentic characters, unique plots and writing style, you’ll want to read When Dawn Breaks.
