NO THANKS

I recently visited an Acme market where I had to pass through the seasonal aisle, which is wider than the standard-sized ones. The entire left side displayed truckloads of Halloween candy, decorations and other related items. What surprised me was that the shelves on the right side exhibited an array of Christmas items. Halloween hasn’t even arrived, and already Christmas marketing had begun.

But where are the Thanksgiving displays?

A shopping trip to other stores, such as Lowe’s, Sears and Home Depot turned up similar scenarios. I’m sure there are more. This has been a pet peeve of mine for years.

Okay, I understand that these are businesses and the bottom line is the almighty dollar, but can’t they give us a break? Instead of shoving the concept of “buy early for Christmas” down consumers’ throats, why don’t they allow us time to pause and give thanks for what we have? I, for one, will not be bullied into submission by the retail business. That doesn’t mean I won’t begin my Christmas shopping as early as possible. I don’t relish the thought of rushing around the last few hours on Christmas Eve to pick up some last-minute, hard-to-find items. What it does mean is that I refuse to be whipped into a frenzy over it, to step back and focus on what’s important at this time of year, and always, rather than on self-gratification and material things.

I am grateful for all that has been allotted to me in this life. I don’t think that one special day out of the year to give thanks is asking too much. So join with me in resisting greedy retailers marketing schemes and in saving the spirit of thanksgiving, even if for only one day.
