AN INTERVIEW WITH DIANE DEAN WHITE

Diane Dean White

This month, I’m chatting with Diane Dean White, author of On a Summer Night.

Welcome, Diane, I’m pleased to have you here.

Thank you, Deb. It’s nice to be asked to be part of your blog audience.

I see that you have an extensive writing history, and when you were in the sixth grade, you asked for a typewriter to write your stories. Can you tell us whatever happened to that first book of poetry you produced back then?

I started poetry in grade school, but also short-stories. I added to my poetry and had quite an accumulation of poems by the time my senior year came. We had a local publishing company and a friend suggested I have them made into booklets. Thus, fortunate friends and family received my first book of poetry for Christmas gifts!

Diane, will you explain what Seeds of Encouragement is?

It began as a paper, made into a scroll with a ribbon I gave out to our church family when we lived in SC; little nuggets of encouragement. Soon I was sharing with other churches, and then on my website. The link on my website is for people who are experiencing, or know others who are dealing with hardships in their lives, and they can click and go to places for help. I follow-up with some people via snail mail, phone calls and emails, too.

There is a page on your website entitled, My Dream. Would you mind sharing about that with us?

After high school I didn’t write poetry and my craft took a turn toward short-stories. As a mother when children leave the nest and marry, life changes and we sometimes want a reminder of those little soft touches and tender arms for hugs. This poem came about from those feelings. And yes, I’ve had dreams about our now grown children being younger, and they’ve been precious. God is good. He listens to our hearts desire.

Please tell us about your latest book.

On a Summer Night takes place when two college bound seniors, Kate and Van, take a trip to southern Florida. Among the beach-days and small town activities, they encounter an experience one night that they could never imagine. They give this to the Lord and try to forget, but Kate never can. It has some twists and turns and goes to present day. Kate and her husband take an early retirement and return to the area, and again she faces emotions from the past. She never told her husband about this, and realizes forgiveness for her and others is needed to be at peace.

Why did you choose to write this story, Diane?

I attended a college in Florida in the sixties, when this story starts out, and I saw some things that I’d never seen in the part of Michigan where I was from. I prayed about what to write, and although I changed gears and took a few turns, the story comes full circle. I tried to listen to God’s leading throughout the entire venture.

Why these characters?

Oh, they’re fiction, but my main character Kate is named for my favorite Aunt, Katheryne. She was 95 years young, and several weeks ago went home to be with the Lord. My dad always called her Kate. I printed copies of the chapters for her to read as she was very alert.

Where can readers find you on the internet?
